Isaiah 9:6-7 NIV

"For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government
and peace there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
will accomplish this."

Today's Reading: Isaiah 9:6-7 (NIV)

These two verses of Isaiah give us a beautiful picture of who Jesus is. A child and son was given to us and for us. Looking at this scripture with the perspective of the New Testament affirms that Jesus fulfilled this prophecy in everything He said and did and is such a great reminder for us. All rule and dominion and authority rest on His shoulders. This passage reminds us Who is in control from now and forever. The weight of life feels so heavy when we try to take control.

When I was a senior in college at the University of Arkansas, I felt the crippling weight of adulthood quickly approaching. I became panicked and started applying for jobs, well over 100. It didn’t matter what city they were in, or what the title was, as long as it had to do with my degree in business, I applied. Many of them I got the automated “Thanks but no thanks” email and many of them I was contacted for an interview. As the interviews started rolling in, I started to gain confidence. But, then the rejections started coming in. It felt like every job I wanted I was turned down for. I spent many days trapped in anxiety as to what my future held. Finally, in March, I realized what I was doing wrong. Not once had I invited God into the process. I was solely relying on my own strength and capability, desperately grasping for control. So, when I was rejected for what I wanted, I was left feeling hopeless. As much as we like to dream up for our lives what we think is best, God reminds us in this passage that it’s a good thing we’re not in control. Our world pushes us towards greed, pride, and fear, and only the heavenly Kingdom is marked by hope and peace.

During 2020, many of us have felt fear over all that is going on in the world. We are seeing brokenness all around us and fear over our worldly kingdoms and governments. Only Jesus has all rule and dominion and authority resting on His shoulders. We have seen a large amount of brokenness in ourselves, others, and the worldly governments that surround us and that rule us. Brothers and sisters, take heart in the fact that it is only Jesus who has full dominion and authority over everything, now and forever. A wonderful counselor, a mighty God, Eternal Father, and a Prince of Peace. What are you holding onto that you need to lay down at the feet of Jesus? We can trust Him with everything, knowing that He is going to work out all things for our good and His glory.

Our world pushes us towards greed, pride, and fear, and only the heavenly Kingdom is marked by hope and peace.
