Today’s Reading: Matthew 2:19-23 NIV
Have you ever heard God speak to you? What was your reaction when He did? Did you accept His word to you or did you struggle with trying to figure out if it was Him speaking or not? I get it. With so many voices trying to speak into our lives right now, it can be difficult to discern God’s voice. I have had only a handful of times where I felt like God has spoken directly to me. Each time I battle if I am hearing God’s voice or if I am just making this up in my head.
I had an experience a couple of months ago where I knew God spoke directly to me but first, some backstory. I had developed an idea that I thought was a pretty good idea. I had been talking to everyone about this idea trying to convince them of the validity of the concept. I was pushing ahead with my idea. Maybe the idea was good, or maybe not. That’s not the point. The point is that I wasn’t waiting on the Lord. One afternoon as I was driving, I began to sense the Lord speaking to me. He was saying, “Wait on Me. Stop moving ahead of Me.” I began the dance of doubt, questioning if I was hearing His voice. I literally asked the question in my head, “Lord are you telling me to wait?” As I asked that question and looked beside me, a dump truck passed by with the words “DO NOT PUSH” written in large white letters.
Now, with the doubt removed, I had a choice. Do I listen to His words and obey? Or do I shrug it off as a mere coincidence? We all face those decisions when the Lord speaks to us. As you read today’s passage, notice Joseph’s response as the Lord speaks to Him. Two times in this passage, God speaks to Joseph in a dream. Take some time today to be quiet and meditate on Joseph’s response each time God speaks to him. Meditate on this scripture passage throughout your day. Find a few minutes sometime today to be still and examine your heart. What in your heart is keeping you from obeying God in this way? What would God need to do in you to help you follow and obey Him like Joseph?
I am praying that you hear the voice of God. May you recognize His voice as He speaks to your heart. May you find the joy that comes when we hear Him and obey.
