But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.
Today's Reading: Luke 2:19
December 22, 2021 Luke 2:19
describes Mary, the mother of Jesus, treasuring and pondering on what a group of shepherds had said about her Son. The shepherds had been told by angels that Jesus had been born and was the Savior, Messiah, and Lord. This was not the first time Jesus had been called this either. Mary was visited by an angel who told her she would carry the Son of God. As Mary held her newborn, the Savior of the world, can you imagine her thoughts?
I remember the days leading up to my daughter’s birth. I had no clue what to think, or how to act for that matter. My mind was filled with excitement, fear, and hope. I would find myself just pondering and thinking… and sometimes it was hard to distinguish between my thoughts and prayers.
“Father, what will my daughter look like? What will her cry sound like? What will she grow up to do? What will her personality be like? Lord, please let her like to fish, and please keep her healthy.”
All I could think of was my child. All I could focus on was my child. My mind in the days leading up to my daughter’s birth was filled with thoughts about my daughter.
I imagine the same was true of Mary. Surely as she gently rocked her Son, she was filled with thoughts and dreams for Him. She treasured the thought of her Son’s divinity. She pondered the mystery of how that was possible. Her mind was filled with so many questions, even though she held the Answer in her arms. I picture Mary daydreaming of what He would be like, sound like, act like, and where He would go. Mary’s heart and mind were fixated on the beauty of Jesus. The treasuring and pondering of these things led her into deep worship.
Do you treasure and ponder the beauty of Jesus? Do you let your thoughts run with the excitement that the Savior, Messiah, and Lord was born? Do you treasure the fact that He came to us, that Jesus reached down to His people, that He walked in flesh? What would it look like for you to worship Jesus by treasuring up His truth and pondering on Him daily? Today, try and let your thoughts center on the richness of God’s goodness. Daydream about how vast and creative Jesus is, rather than how busy your schedule is. Treasure the fact that you have peace in a Savior, hope in a Messiah, and redemption in the Lord. Ponder the unimaginable grace of God, and let your thoughts be worship unto Jesus.
